‘Suburban Identities’ Exhibition

Croydon has long been associated with the monotony of suburban life – an ordinary place on the edge of London where housing is reasonable and families are raised. But perceptions of such places are rapidly changing as working patterns change and living centrally becomes so dramatically unaffordable for the vast majority of the city’s population.

The suburbs, and Croydon in particular, present an immediate opportunity to tackle London’s acute housing shortage through carefully managed densification of suburban environments. Of course this needs to be managed in a way that is true to their inherent character and affordable nature if it is to create genuinely diverse and vibrant places to live and work.

Brick by Brick was established by Croydon Council in direct response to this context, with the aim of delivering high-quality residential development across a range of small suburban sites throughout the borough. Our new exhibition, part of the London Festival of Architecture, explores our award-winning approach to suburban densification, working with a range of imaginative and insightful London-based architecture practices including our in-house practice Common Ground Architects.

The exhibition runs for the whole of June 2018 in the RISE Gallery, 7-9 St.George’s Walk, Croydon, CR0 1YH. It is open from Tuesday-Friday from 10am-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-4pm. Admission is free.
